Introduction | Safety Issues | Protective Equipment | Kilns

Nothing is more important than your safety, and the safety of others you may come into contact with. We all have the responsibility to be sure that every piece of equipment and tool that is used is in perfect working condition. If you are not sure. Stop. Examine, then ask someone for help before proceeding.

The tools and equipment we use in beadmaking, fusing glass or Art Clay Silver require certain precautions be observed. Most of the time we work with MAPP gas and Oxygen / Propane. All of which are highly flammable. Will you blow up your house? Maybe, if you are not careful. Most often we hear the husband of a wife beginner beadmaker say "oh no, a torch in the house, she'll burn the house down." In all of the years we have taught lampworking we haven't heard of any of our students burning down anything, yet. We want it to stay that way.

Plan out a work area or studio with as much forethought as possible. Draw a diagram, if that helps you to visualize more clearly. Where are the gas tanks going to be? Is there enough fresh air ventilated into the work area or room? Where is your kiln going to be? Is there enough space between the kiln and any wall around it? Anything you encounter along the way can be addressed at that time, if you hadn't already planed for it.

Remember, if you are not sure about something or you are having a problem figuring something out, please let us know. Whether you purchased your equipment and supplies from us or not. We are here to help you every way we can. Our advice and feedback are free.

Thanks,
Karen and David
