Introduction | Safety Issues | Protective Equipment | Kilns

We have talked a little about protection already, as far as general safety is concerned. We are concerned about using safety equipment as well.

Prolonged exposure, several hours a day, requires Didymium lenses (pronounced die-dim-e-um). These safety glasses help to reduce the yellow/orange flame when heating glass but have little effect on infrared and UV light. We highly recommend using AUR-92 glasses. These eliminate the soda lime flair and offer good IR and UV protection. In fact we now feature these in our basic beadmaking kits. Don't think your sunglasses will do the trick, they will not. Your eyes are very valuable, so buy the best glasses you can afford.

Some beadmakers/lampworkers use an Oxygen/Propane burner, such as a Minor, Major or Carlisle bench burner, which should be equipped with flash back arrestors. These prevent fuel gas from igniting back through the hoses to the tanks.

Using a single fuel source such as MAPP gas doesn't require these devices. Just make sure all fittings and connections are tight. If there is a MAPP gas leak you will not have any trouble smelling it. The gas really smells like rotten eggs.
Again, make sure your work station is setup safely. A heat/fire proof surface is a must.

Have a fire extinguisher nearby at all times, just in case.
